Using autobrush can feel like learning to brush all over again, a little bit as if you're suddenly trying to brush your teeth with your non-dominant hand. With a traditional toothbrush, you’re used to targeting individual teeth and using a hand and wrist motion ingrained in your habits since you were only a few years old. Just as with a traditional brush, autobrush requires the right technique to be effective.
So, be patient with yourself! We share some tips in this article to help you achieve the results you're looking for, especially so that you can target your molars effectively.
Mastering the Technique
Use Broad Sweeps and a Figure-8 Motion
- Side-to-Side: Gently tug the brush toward the corners of your mouth to ensure the bristles reach your back teeth. This might feel a bit uncomfortable at the beginning, but without the full motion of the brush, you might miss out on the teeth at the very back.
- Figure-8 Shape: Move the brush side-to-side in a sweeping figure-8 pattern, adding small circular motions in the movement so the bristles contact each tooth surface, including the molars.
Check for Fit
- Possible Size Issue: If it still doesn’t feel like your molars are getting enough coverage, you may need a different brush head size. How to Find the Right Brush Head Size
- Free Exchange: Use our Problem Report Form to request the proper size at no cost, provided this is your first exchange. Have your order details ready, and we’ll review your request within 24 hours.
Remember: Flossing and Tongue Scraping Still Matter
- Flossing: Even the best brushing technique can’t reach all the tight spaces between teeth.
- Tongue Scraping: Removing bacteria from the tongue prevents bad breath and keeps your entire mouth healthier.
Learning to use autobrush effectively may take a bit of patience, but once you adapt to the u-shaped design and figure-8 motion, your teeth—including those molars—will get the thorough cleaning they need.
