Are autobrush Products Eligible for FSA/HSA?
Flexible Spending Account (FSA) and Health Savings Account (HSA) can cover a broad range of medical expenses, items such as toothbrushes, including autobrush, usually don’t qualify for reimbursement unless they are prescribed for a specific medical condition. Because autobrush is classified as a general consumer product, it typically isn’t eligible for FSA or HSA spending.
Why the Limitation?
- Medical Necessity: FSAs and HSAs require a direct medical purpose or prescription for an expense to qualify. Standard toothbrushes, even those with innovative features, are considered everyday personal care items rather than medically necessary devices.
- IRS Guidelines: The rules set by the IRS generally categorize toothbrushes under personal hygiene products, thus excluding them from FSA/HSA coverage.
What If I Have a Special Prescription?
In rare cases where a dentist provides a formal prescription detailing why a u-shaped toothbrush like autobrush is required for a specific medical treatment, you could inquire with your FSA or HSA provider. However, please note that most general consumer brushes—including autobrush—don’t meet the criteria without such documentation.
If you have questions about what qualifies under your FSA or HSA plan, it’s best to consult your plan provider or a tax professional. Each provider may have slightly different policies and requirements.
We hope this clarifies the difference between FSA and HSA accounts and why autobrush purchases aren’t covered. If you have any further questions, feel free to reach out to us at customercare@autobrush.com. We’re here to help!
